JAMES HOFF | Primary Information 2012 Artists Writing Program

Support Primary Information and contemporary artists who are writing and making books, by making a small donation here.
In 2012, Primary Information will launch a dedicated Artists' Writings series, in which we will work with artists to develop new publications around their writings. This series will be ongoing and our goal is to publish four new books in this series during 2012. While some of our past publications have reprinted or compiled artists' writings, we are now in a position to support and provide resources for contemporary artists who are actively writing as part of their practice.
We are currently working with Lutz Bacher, Florian Hecker and Fia Backström on the first three titles in this series. Lutz Bacher’s publication Do You Love Me? will be published in late Winter, with Florian Hecker’s following in Spring.

For the 1964 Worlds Fair the Indonesian Government brought to New York City a complete Javanese Gamelan. When the fair ended in 1965 the gamelan was left at the Indonesian Consulate to the UN. In 1983 Gamelan Kusuma Laras Invocation was formed to study and perform traditional Javanese music on this collection of instruments. A chamber-sized group will perform a short invocation this and the next three evenings. No funny hats will be worn.
Metal Tongues is Elliot Bergman (electric kalimba). With Chad Taylor and Ben Vida. Elliot is in what was an Afrobeat ensemble called Nomo. Metal Tongues however is an electric Kalimba ensemble and begins our attempt at matching unrelated/related groups to the gamelan ensemble.

JAMES HOFF | Edit Event & New Publication

Oct 25th - Edit: Constructing Primary Dispersion
Artist, writer, and co-founder of Primary Information and No Input Books, James Hoff presents "The Ah Oh My God," a media-saturated lecture on minor history as primary information, or rather, secondary information as primary history.
An event series at Kelly Writers House programmed by Danny Snelson featuring editorial practices in contemporary writing technologies. “Edit” is a roving events series pairing innovative performances with focused critical responses toward an exploration of editorial practices in contemporary writing and the arts. Extended engagements relate these diverse occasions, with each event expanded online and occasionally drawn together in print or other media.

Inventory Arousal is an artists’ book by American artist and publisher James Hoff with writer, editor, and archivist Danny Snelson. The book reassembles a set of reference texts originally gathered during a live, transnational editorial performance. An associative lecture given by Hoff in Oslo, featuring hundreds of images and hours of artists’ video, was mirrored by Danny Snelson in Tokyo, via Skype, who simultaneously extracted and manipulated a massive body of previously compiled texts concerning key avant-garde figures, publications, works, and movements that Hoff discussed. These sources included artist interviews, book reviews, magazine articles, memoirs, stock lists and blog posts. Acting as a quasi-transcript of this joint performance, Inventory Arousal reveals an unpredictable narrative formed along the predictable contours of collective history.
Following a presentation by Vito Acconci and preceding a panel discussion. Live French dubbing. Part of an event titled "Vito Acconci [Words from Poetry through Art to Architecture] Expériences de langage à New York." For more information, here.

JOHN WIESE | 100 Seven Inches

100 Seven Inch Records By John Wiese.
On the occasion of artist and composer John Wiese's 100th 7-inch record release, Family hosts a sound installation and retrospective exhibit. All 7-inches produced by Wiese over the last 13 years are presented, in addition to a sound piece featuring the 100th, entitled Exhausted Spectral Incantation — a one-sided record, featuring a single lock-groove. Many releases were published on Wiese's own label, Helicopter, as well as over 50 other independent labels from around the world, in editions from 6 to several thousand.
To coincide with the exhibition a hardcover monograph (b/w, 150 pages) will be published by Helicopter featuring essay's by Sam McKinlay and Brian Roettinger.
From the preface: "A 7-inch record is the best format. I spent the majority of my youth mail-ordering 7-inches and waiting, usually months, for them to arrive. 7-inches really are the best because, practically speaking, the only thing you can do while they play is listen to them." — John Wiese
Opening reception October 17, 6–9pm
October 17—November 8, 2011, Open 1–9pm, Closed Mondays
Family 436 North Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles, California 90036
Monograph published by Helicopter, available at the event.

'Seven Of Wands' CD is out on PAN this October.

HECKER | Bregman / Deutsch Chimaera Online Publication

INTERRUPTIONS #4. Bregman / Deutsch Chimaera – 47 minutes in bifurcated attention. 19.07.2011 (47′ 19”)
“Florian Hecker suggests an amalgamation of two seminal collections of psychoacoustic works, which demand from its audience a selective piecing-together of distinct units into an overall Gestalt, one that culminates in a chimerical auditory experience.”
“The point of departure for this podcast comprises two publications from the mid nineties: ‘Musical Illusions and Paradoxes’ by Diana Deutsch and ‘Demonstrations of Auditory Scene Analysis: The Perceptual Organization of Sound’ by Albert S. Bregman and Pierre A. Ahad. These CDs feature demonstrations of the research in psychoacoustics (Bregman) and musical psychology (Deutsch) by their respective authors. Both volumes are introduced with a spoken commentary by the authors themselves and accompanied by extensive booklets that further describe what is heard as well as instructions and suggestions on parameters such as playback volume, loudspeaker position, distance from the same, and whether headphones are required or not. Here the recorded and textual components form a prescriptive double, a package where the listener verifies the CDs objectives though a subjective audible encounter.” – RADIO WEB MACBA
A high resolution mp3 file and an accompanying PDF are available for download here.

JAMES HOFF | Triple Canopy Podcast & Women In Sound Art

'Love Bombing' is a noncomprehensive mix of religious, cult, and armed-revolutionary songs that artist James Hoff first began compiling in 2006. This collection includes recordings by David Koresh, L. Ron Hubbard, the Trees Community, Children of God, and Jim Jones's Peoples Temple Choir, among others, sourced by Hoff through trading communities, record fairs, and file-sharing networks. Hoff's inquiry stems from research he conducted while developing a 2009 sound installation on the convergence of modern genre music and political action.

Massive and much needed compilation of women sound artists! (Courtesy of Nonsequitur)
